Because he dared to offer legitimate criticism of the Negro’s new favorite drug of choice: Fox’s “Empire”.
For those of you who may not know what “Empire” is, the best way I can describe it is a Negro Soap Opera and (somewhat) fictionalized account of how many of some of our People’s favorite rappers have risen to prominence, and of the sacrifices and Spiritual and ethical compromises they’ve made to stay on top.
I tried so hard to keep my thoughts on that show to myself, because – frankly – I wasn’t in the mood to deal with the fallout.
Without having watched a single episode, I was well aware of what the show really was, and didn’t feel that I had to watch it, in order to receive confirmation of what I had already suspected.
With that in mind, I was content to let the sleeping giant enjoy his blissfully ignorant slumber, and probably would have been content to leave well enough alone, had I not stumbled upon this article written by Dr. Boyce Watkins.
Though I take issue with what I consider Prof. Watkins’ “flip-floppy” nature (it sometimes seems his opinions shift with the wind), I nonetheless agreed with his assessment of the show, when he called it yet another parade of “Pimps, hoes, thugs, gangsters, emasculated Black men and all kinds of other kinds of stereotypical coonery…”
And, make no mistake, that’s exactly what this show is.
I know this because I watched the show’s first two episodes. Under normal circumstances, I wouldn’t have bothered, but when I saw the responses to Dr. Watkins’ commentary of the show – invective spewed at him because he also dared have an opinion of a show that differed from the masses – I realized I didn’t have much of a choice.
If I’m going to offer a commentary on something – especially when it’s a criticism of something the more Slave-Minded among us just can’t seem to do without – then I ALREADY KNOW it can’t be based on conjecture; instead, it has to be based on fact.
And the fact is: “Empire” is nothing but propaganda. Hands, down.
- The Unrepentant, Drug-Dealing, Murdering Thug that uses his ill-gotten profits as a springboard into the music industry
- The Ride-Or-Die, Ratchet-Ass Thot who spends 20 years of her life in prison, rotting away behind something that the Drug-Dealing Thug actually did
- The Spoiled, Entitled Negropean Brat with no respect for himself, his People, or his family
- The Obligatory Gay Son
- The Ivy League-Educated Son with Jungle Fever
- The Nosy, Blond Wig/Weave-Wearing Aunt Jemima
- The Token Light-skinned Heifer with a nasty attitude, AND a bad case of Internalized Racism
This, in addition to a VARIETY of other thugs, hoes, skanks, and all-around miserable, horrible human beings.
In an ideal world, a piece of trash this blatantly stereotypical would be immediately recognized for what it is.
But, this isn’t an ideal world. This is a world in which White Supremacy still controls the majority of the media outlets that are responsible for the images we see on TV, and the messages heard on the radio.
This is a world in which the same television network with a news department whose entire raison d’être is to distort the truth, and paint African Americans in the worst light imaginable, at every given turn, now gets to make tens of millions of dollars in ad revenue denigrating an entire group of people who are too busy being happy with seeing themselves on the Idiot Box to give a damn about the SHAMEFUL way they’re being represented.
If you doubt the veracity of my earlier statements, just check out some the responses to Dr. Watkins’ post:
“IT’S ONLY TV!!! TV!!! TV IS SUPPOS[ED] TO PUSH BOUNDARIES…TV IS JUST FANTASY…ITS ENTERTAINMENT…leave it to Black folk to not support other Black folk…”
“A simple rebuttal; your blog and views are the exact reason we don’t have much Black television…but what positive Black television are you supporting?”
“All Black people do is cry and bitch over shit…get over it…I’m Black and I’m sick of seeing you people crying and whining!”
And, here’s my personal favorite:
“You have to crawl before you can walk…yes it’s somewhat exploitative…the bigger prize is getting the foot in the door and the exposure…”
“’Somewhat exploitative’”? Are you kidding me?
So, the problem with Empire, let these psychotic, mentally dead mofos tell it, isn’t the fact that it exists so much as it is the fact there are actually people out there who recognize the show for what it is, and refuse to remain silent about the damage it’s doing to our People.
Because, now all of a sudden, legitimate criticism and concern for one’s People is really just more of that “Crabs in a Barrel” shit.
The irony of all this is that many of the same Negroes who spent the better part of last year crying about #BlackLivesMatter (which, however well-intentioned, is barely more than another version of “Please, white people, LIKE us”), are flocking to this show, in pretty much the same way Avon Barksdale had the whole of the Baltimore projects lined up for a hit of that “Pandemic”.
And their very support of this show communicates that in the final analysis, #BlackLivesReallyDONTMatter.
They don’t matter, at all.
